MIAM in Kent
Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting

What is a MIAM?

During your appointment, you will:

• Understand how family mediation works

• Talk through your current situation

• Explore whether mediation is suitable

• Learn about alternatives to court

You will not be asked to make decisions or commit to mediation.

A MIAM appointment typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes.

Do I need a MIAM?

In most cases, you are required to attend a MIAM before applying to court for:

• Child arrangements

• Financial matters

• Other family court applications

There are some exceptions (for example, where there are safety concerns or urgency). This can be discussed with you before booking.

What happens after the MIAM?

After your meeting, you can decide how you would like to move forward.

• If mediation is suitable → the next steps can be arranged

• If mediation is not appropriate → you will be guided on alternative options

• If the other person does not engage → you can still move forward with your application

There is no obligation to continue with mediation.

MIAM: £120 per person
