MIAM in Kent
Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting

A MIAM in Kent is the first step in the family mediation process. A Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting is a private, individual meeting to explain how mediation works and assess whether it is suitable for your circumstances.

In many cases, attending a MIAM is required before making certain court applications relating to children or financial matters.

What is a MIAM?

A MIAM is a confidential meeting between you and a trained family mediator. During the meeting, you will:

• Learn how family mediation works
• Discuss your current situation
• Consider whether mediation is appropriate
• Explore alternatives to court where possible

A MIAM appointment typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes.

When is a MIAM required?

In most cases, a MIAM is required before applying to court for:

  • Child arrangements orders

  • Financial remedy application

  • Certain family court proceedings

There are exemptions in some circumstances, including cases involving domestic abuse or urgency. If you are unsure whether a MIAM is required, this can be discussed during an initial enquiry.

How to Book a MIAM Appointment

MIAM appointments are available:

• Online
• At flexible times where possible

What Happens Next?

Following the MIAM, there are several possible outcomes:

If mediation is suitable and both parties agree to proceed:
Joint mediation sessions can be arranged to address child arrangements, financial matters or other issues arising from separation or divorce.

If mediation is not suitable:
You will be advised accordingly and provided with the appropriate documentation if required for court purposes.

If one party does not wish to proceed:
The MIAM requirement can still be confirmed, allowing you to consider alternative next steps.

Mediation remains a voluntary process. The purpose of the MIAM is to provide clarity and ensure that you are fully informed before making decisions about how to proceed.

You are not committing to mediation by attending a MIAM. It is simply an opportunity to understand your options and consider whether mediation is right for your circumstances.

MIAM Fees

MIAM: £120 per person

Payment is required in advance of each appointment. Further details will be provided upon booking.
